This last weekend we took a road-trip on the Garden route to Knysna, a beautiful coastal town with a unique lagoon/estuary and an unlimited supply of oysters. We spent Saturday afternoon at the world's highest bungee bridge, a whopping 216m jump off into a gorge with a view of the ocean. Three of us took the jump, but I opted out after reading signs discouraging anyone with back injuries from participating. It was still amazing to watch, especially during a perfectly clear, sunny afternoon, although I did find myself wishing that I could jump too.
That evening, we went to a beautiful restaurant on the Knysna lagoon and I sampled some of the local oysters for my first time - very delicious, especially with tabasco sauce and freshly squeezed lemon! I'm a new fan of these bivalves.
Sunday morning we had brunch down by the water and we all enjoyed some nice coffee (most of SA seems to only drink instant, powdered coffee) and fresh omelets. After, we traveled to the bird and monkey sanctuary to observe some more African wildlife. The monkey sanctuary had everything from squirrel monkeys to black and ring-tailed lemurs, all of which roamed free over an open park area with numerous feeding stations of fruit and nuts. The "Birds of Eden" sanctuary was equally beautiful with flamingos, hornbills, parrots, spoonbills and more. Some of the more social birds rode on our shoulders for parts of the tour while others were very skittish. All in all, it was a great weekend with beautiful weather, scenery, animal life and food.
